<연산오계> - 우리나라의 재래종 닭으로 1980년 천연기념물 265호로 지정되었다. - 세계식량기구(FAO)에 Yeonsan Ogye로 품종 등록이 되어 있다. - 뼈는 물론 깃털, 피부, 눈자위, 눈동자, 심지어 발톱까지 모두 검다. 말 그대로 검은 닭(烏鷄)이다. 오계 중 계룡산 자락을 본산으로 하는 연산오계가 약성이 가장 좋다 하여 연계노해(連鷄魯蟹- 연산의 오계와 노성의 참게)라는 사자성어가 생길 정도로 이름을 얻었다. 지금도 연산지역에서는 오계닭이라는 호칭이 쓰이고 있다.
<오골계> - 일본의 천연기념물이다. - FAO에 Ogolgye로 품종등록이 되어 있다. - 털은 희고 뼈가 검다. 실크처럼 부드럽고 흰 솜털 속에 까마귀처럼 검은 뼈를 갖고 있다 하여 오골계(烏骨鷄)란 이름을 얻었다. 일제 강점기에 우리나라에 들어왔으며 1936년 동아일보에 처음 소개되었다. 1962년 경남 기장에서 기르던 오골계가 천연기념물 135호로 지정됐으나 전염병으로 몰사해 1981년 지정 해제되었다.
* 연산오계와 경남 기장의 오골계는 품종이 다르며, 연산오계의 천연기념물 지정(1980년)과 기장 오골계의 천연기념물 지정 해제(1981년)는 서로 연관이 없다.
